A 24-room boutique hotel
Seaside Sophistication since 1879
The Virginia provides a truly intimate environment that perfectly balances the modern with the timeless. A haven of relaxed elegance and thoughtful design, it's a contemporary interpretation of seaside sophistication that never fails to delight. You'll love waking up each morning to made-to-order continental breakfast, sipping coffee on the front porch, and strolling to the beach just down Jackson Street.
Originally named 'The Ebbitt House' after its first owners, Alfred and Ellen Ebbitt, the hotel was renamed 'The Virginia Hotel' during its heyday in the early 1890s when it was a popular destination for visitors from Washington, D.C and Philadelphia. It was frequently mentioned in the society pages of The Philadelphia Inquirer, since many of the city’s fashionable set would decamp to the shore during the torrid summer season.
Today, the Virginia stands as a historic icon of hospitality, proudly offering seaside welcome to discerning travelers near and far. The Virginia is a recipient of numerous awards and accolades for its impeccable service and standards from notable publications like Conde Nast Traveler's Reader’s Choice Awards, the Trip Advisor Award of Excellence, and the Conde Nast Gold List.

Spring Migration with Richard Crossley
Available Monday, May 20 through Thursday, May 23, 2024
Join renowned author, photographer, and birder Richard Crossley on a spring Cape May birding retreat, focusing on the season's red knot migration on the shores of the Delaware Bay.
Red knots arrive to Cape May in early May, famished and half their departure weight after their long journey northward. Their arrival coincides with the annual horseshoe crab spawning in the Delaware Bay. During May and June of each year thousands of horseshoe crabs emerge from the depths of the Bay to spawn along the shoreline—an incredible natural phenomenon. Red knots, relying on masses of tiny, green horseshoe crab eggs on the beach, descend on the banks of the Delaware Bay and gorge themselves for about one month in preparation for the final leg of their journey to their Arctic breeding grounds.
Richard Crossley is an internationally acclaimed birder, photographer and award winning author of ‘The Crossley ID Guide’ series. Crazy, wildly passionate, driven and single-minded are just a few of the words used to describe his love of birding and the outdoors.

Sweet Amalia Oyster Getaway
Available for Stays this June, September, and October
Experience the world of oyster farming firsthand with a deluxe getaway in Cape May that pairs hard work with with fine tastes.
“It’s a gritty, dirty, muddy job, and perhaps you have to be just a little bit crazy to do it. But there’s also a romance to this work," says Lisa Calvo, owner of Sweet Amalia Oyster Farm.
For three decades, most recently with Rutgers University, Lisa studied shellfish pathology, helping to develop oysters resistant to disease. As a side hustle, she launched Sweet Amalia, which was named for her daughter, who, as a toddler, would slurp oysters straight off the reef. The project began as a learning laboratory for studying aquaculture so that Calvo might better assist other farmers, but, a couple of years ago, it became her full-time occupation. Now, on a six-acre, intertidal plot located off of Route 47, Calvo and her team harvest approximately 3,000 oysters per season.
Experience the world of oyster farming firsthand with a deluxe getaway in Cape May that pairs hard work with with fine tastes. On the storied banks of the Delaware Bay, you'll receive a shucking lesson and an oyster tasting led by Sweet Amalia's experienced oyster farmers. And, to round out your stay in Cape May, you'll enjoy a world-class dinner in the Ebbitt Room that incorporates tide-to-table oyster recipes from Chef Jason Hanin.
Included in your stay:
- Deluxe Overnight Accommodations at The Virginia Hotel or The Beach Plum Farm Cottages
- An In-Depth Tour and Hands-On Oyster Shucking Lesson at Sweet Amalia Oyster Farm
- An Oyster Tasting and Picnic Lunch at Sweet Amalia Oyster Farm
- A Delicious Dinner in the Virginia's private Richmond Room on Tuesday evening, featuring a themed menu prepared by Executive Chef Jason Hanin
